Oslo, Feb 11, 2010 -- Kashmir group of Norwegian parliament
reconstituted in a meeting held at parliament house here on
Thursday. The meeting was presided by the group’s Chairman
from Christian Democrat Party (KrF), Mr.Knut Arild Hareide
and members participated in the meeting were Snarre Valen
from Socialist Left party (SV), Hadia Tajik from Labour
Party (AP) and Mr.Øyvind Vaksdal from Progress Party (FrP).
Mr.Knut Arild Hareide briefed the participants about the
Kashmir issue and objectives of the formation of the Kashmir
Group in the parliament.
The group is reconstituted and its new chairman elected in
light of recent changes in the result of September 2009's
election of the parliament.
Parliamentary heads of all parties in the Norwegian
Parliament nominated their representatives to participate
the group. The group Chairman, Mr. Hareide is the former
Minister of Environment and the Deputy Chair of the Democrat
Party (KrF). Snarre Valen of SV party became Vice Chairman
of the group.
It maybe noted that the Norwegian Parliamentary Group on
Kashmir has been actively engaged in monitoring the
situation in disputed Kashmir for about a decade. The
Parliamentary group was first formed in 2000 and was led by
journalist-turned-politician and former MP, Lars Rise of the
christen democrat party. The group has showed a great deal
of interest in this issue and visited the disputed territory
several times both sides of the LOC (Line of control).
Deputy Speaker of Norwegian Parliament, Mr. Jon Lilletun
(Late) took over the charge of the group in 2005 but after
his death, Mr. Ola T Lånke, another Deputy of Parliament
was elected as a Chairman of the Norwegian parliamentary
group on Kashmir.
